1/4 Leather. On March 14, 1882, the day of this 79th birthday, G. K. Heller of Cheltenham, Philadelphia, began writing his daily notes in this journal, a practice he would continue until his death in October of 1886. The first pages detail the cost of houses he built and sold in Germantown and Cheltenham; the rest of the book is filled with daily notes mostly concerning the weather but also events and people. He wrote ‘I saw the comet’ on Oct 10, 1882, no doubt referring to the Great Comet of that year. He records births and deaths, family member and neighbor activities, the daily weather and his activities in the garden – all in all an active journal of an active, if elderly, man. Very good.
